Barcelona gradually reclaimed the lead over Real Madrid in a match that at times appeared to be headed for a traditional brawl. But it took all 90 minutes to figure it out because it wasn’t a simple matter.
Both teams displayed to the American audience during the game’s peaceful opening run just why they are among the best in the world by flashing great runs with exceptional control. A stunning display of LaLiga ability included tiki-taka and long-ball counterattacks.
Ousmane Dembelé’s exquisite shot in the 15th minute gave Courtois no chance to make a stop and gave the game its first goal.
Madrid had its chances, with the most significant coming just three minutes later when a cross struck Araujo in the hand and Madrid was awarded a penalty. But for some reason, Vinicius Jr. hit the ball too high, causing it to crash off the crossbar.
Although only five of their 25 shots on goal in the entire game were on target, this wasn’t their only opportunity. Five shots on goal for Real Madrid, however, and no goals is a startling number.
Real Madrid occasionally appeared to be exceedingly unfortunate, or “salao”. Nothing fell for them despite numerous shots hitting the post, the crossbar, and even the goalkeeper’s back. I guess there are times when it’s just not your day.
The situation was the exact reverse in Barcelona. Although they undoubtedly had a few bad attempts of their own, the Blaugrana only attempted 12 shots, 7 of which were on target, and they were able to score on half of them.
But not everything went their way. Their second goal didn’t come until the 85th minute, on a beautiful shot by Fermin López from just outside the box. Five minutes after that goal was made, a Ferran Torres tip caught Courtois off guard, and the ensuing tap-in to conclude the game.
Before returning to Spain to be ready for the lengthy season, both clubs will play one more game in the US. Barcelona, though, will walk with a little more energy. They triumph 3-0 in the first El Clásico of the new season.
