PSG finished as runners-up in the last group of the UEFA Champions League group stage, despite a hard-fought victory against Juventus.
PSG and Juventus were favorites to go through to the next stage, but Benfica showed class and told that they were not in the Champions League to play.
Benfica held the French giants to a draw for the first and second legs of their matches, before going on to beat other teams in the group.
Benfica poured in five second-half goals, including one in stoppage time, which incredibly dislodged PSG from the top spot onaway goals scoredthroughout the group stage.
While PSG beat Juve 2-1 on the night, their Portuguese rivals overcame Maccabi Haifa 6-1 away from home, adding vital goals to their tally in the 88th and 92nd minutes.
Both teams ended level on 14 points, sharing a goal difference of +9, having both won four games, drawn two, and lost none.
Although Juventus put up a decent performance, they had already been eliminated from the Champions League and were fighting for a spot in the Europa League. But, Mbappe’s brilliance was enough to make things worse.
Mbappe slid through defenders in Juve’s half and fired a sublime shot into the back of the net, giving PSG a 1-0 lead, after they struggled to contain their visitors.
But, Leonardo Bonucci equalized the visitors in the first half, although they could not finish with the draw.
Mbappe was at it again after the break, feeding his teammate, Nuno Mendes with a beautiful pass to put the ball in the back of the net, placing PSG in the lead.
Maquinhos was always a rock-solid presence, as he made some important blocks for the hoats.
After scoring the second goal for his team, young Nuno Memdes went off injured later on after colliding with Marco Verratti.
It was a heartbreaking restlt for the head coach, even though Juventus did still make the Europa League with Maccabi Haifa also losing.
