According to an internal analysis by Twitter, the site is becoming less appealing to marketers due to the worrisome fall in interest for previously top-performing topics and the shift to NSFW content.
The number of English-speaking “heavy tweeters” is “absolutely declining,” according to a Reuters article. This is a major issue for the platform because, although only accounting for fewer than 10% of monthly users, they generate 90% of all tweets and 50% of its global revenue.
Additionally, these people tweet about the subjects that are most appealing to advertisers, such as news, entertainment, and sports.
Despite the decline in talks about subjects like Kim Kardashian, e-sports, and fashion, topics like cryptocurrencies, NSFW contents are becoming more popular. Indeed, NSFW content accounts for an estimated 13% of traffic, making them two of the fastest-growing subjects on Twitter, per the company’s research.
Only a few days before Elon Musk is anticipated to ultimately buy Twitter for $44 billion, a scathing article surfaced.
Up until last summer, Twitter’s cryptocurrency users grew rapidly
Despite being one of the Twitter subjects with the largest growth in interest, posts about cryptocurrency are still down from earlier peaks. The amount of English-speaking consumers interested in cryptocurrencies was at its maximum in late 2021, when prices started to rise, according to the survey.
The survey also point out that as cryptocurrency prices have fallen, so too have the levels of debate on the platform. Actually, the decrease has been so sharp that a report’s expert speculated that “cryptocurrencies may not be an area of growth in the future.”
Some of the most well-known cryptocurrency-related tweeters who have stopped posting include:
- @VladZamfir, an Ethereum researcher with a 75,000-strong following. They were last active in late 2021.
- @NickSzabo4, a cryptographer with 349,000 followers. He was last active in early 2021.
- 3AC founders @zhusu and @KyleLDavies. The pair boasted a combined following of 611,000 but stopped posting in July this year for obvious reasons.
If Elon wants to get his money’s worth, it appears that he may need to embrace NSFW content.
