An aide confirmed on Wednesday that Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., is the subject of a new FBI probe.
The investigation was first made public by the online news source Semafor, which claimed that federal prosecutors in Manhattan’s Southern District of New York were in charge of it.
An inquiry for comments was not immediately answered by the Manhattan office.
Five years ago, Menendez, the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, was the focus of a corruption probe that ended in a mistrial.
The focus of the probe was the senator’s association with Salomon Melgen, a Florida optometrist, and $660,000 in contributions to Menendez’s 2012 reelection campaign.
Later, the Justice Department made the decision not to pursue the senator’s retrial in 2018.
