Red Bull team won the Formula One constructor’s championship title for the first time in 8 years, overthrowing Mercedes, who had won eight straight titles.

A day after the company founder and team owner Dietrich Mateschitz died at 78, Red Bull secured the championship at Grand Prix with three races to go.

Max Verstappen recouped from a slow pit-stop and passed Lewis Hamilton who has won numerous titles for his team in the closing stages.

Verstappen clinched a beautiful title win for his team, after a long time of coming in next to the best.

“Max Verstappen, you are world champion, we are world champions!” team boss Christian Horner said over the radio after the race.

“Dietrich Mateschitz, thank you for all you have done. “It was almost as if it had been scripted for him to have to come back through the field.”

“I think Dietrich would have quite enjoyed that race, from above, to see us overtake a Mercedes with five, six laps to go to win the constructors championship. I think he would have been very proud about that race today.”

Verstappen’s victory, along with team-mate Sergio Perez’s fourth place, took Red Bull to 656 points.

The win puts Red Bull in front and puts an end to the Mercedes team’s incredible title run since 2014.

Red Bull was unable to beat Mercedes to the constructors’ championship last year despite Verstappen claiming the drivers’ title.

Verstappen dedicated his title win to their team owner, Dietrich Mateschitz.

“We gave it everything out there today, and of course it’s a very difficult weekend for us, so this one is definitely dedicated to Dietrich, ” he said.

Red Bull won its four previous championships in consecutive years, from 2010 to 2013.
