The Colts offense had a terrible night on Thursday, but their trip to Denver had one bright spot.
They triumphantly left town. The Colts eventually prevailed 12-9 in overtime when cornerback Stephon Gilmore intercepted Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson’s final pass in the end zone despite forcing two turnovers, allowing six sacks, and punting seven times.
When it was ended, quarterback Matt Ryan agreed with head coach Frank Reich’s comment that it was “great that you can have a game like that and still win” in the NFL. Despite how poorly the team performed the rest of the game, Ryan noted the final two offensive drives of the contest ended in field goals and “showed a lot of guts,” which will increase confidence in the locker room.
“We found a way,” Ryan said, via the team’s website. “And with the young group we have, particularly we had a lot of young players playing tonight, there’s belief that gets created, even though it’s ugly. There’s belief that gets created when you find a way to get the job done. And that’s what we’ve got to do right now. We’ve got to figure out how to get better, there’s no doubt about that, and try to play better, more consistent football. But you gotta win games. You gotta find ways to win games and I’m proud of the guys.”
Ryan is correct that they must find methods to win games when things aren’t going their way, but it is still unclear whether they will be able to instill enough confidence to overcome the poor execution that has characterized the majority of their first five weeks of the season.
