The football squad from Charter Oak won its biggest game of the year on Friday.
However, the Chargers did not make things simple for themselves.
Richie Munoz and his teammates held strong as the Chargers defeated Ayala 32-29 in their Mountain West League debut despite Charter Oak racking up over 200 yards in penalties and giving up nine sacks.
Due to penalties and poor snaps, Charter Oak (8-0) found itself in some undesirable positions on the offensive side. But the Chargers regularly came out on top to score points after falling down.
Munoz ran for a touchdown in addition to completing 17 of 23 passes for 351 yards and two touchdowns.
Ayala (6-2) made a late surge and had a chance to either score a touchdown to grab the lead or kick a matching field goal.
Bishop Turner intercepted a ball on fourth down, close to midfield, prompting Charter Oak’s defense to stand up in the final moments.
