In their US Open third-round matchup, Coco Gauff defeated Madison Keys, a past finalist, 6-2, 6-3, in just over an hour on Friday at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. The 12th-seeded Gauff will next compete against China’s Shuai Zhang, who advanced after defeating Rebecca Marino 6-2, 6-4.
Coco Gauff, 18 years old, is the youngest American woman to have advanced to the round of 16 at all four major tournaments since Venus Williams, who did so in 1998 at the age of 18.
Another match saw No. 31 Shelby Rogers defeated by No. 5 seed Ons Jabeur 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to go to the fourth round.
In each of her previous three appearances at Flushing Meadows, Jabeur had been defeated in the third round before defeating Rogers in 2 hours and 17 minutes.
Veronika Kudermetova, ranked 18th, will be Jabeur’s next opponent. She defeated Dalma Galfi in just 47 minutes, winning 6-2, 6-0.
The No. 17 seed from France, Caroline Garcia, eliminated 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu with a 6-3, 6-2 victory that advanced her to the fourth round. Garcia has triumphed in 11 straight matches, including the Cincinnati championship last month. A little earlier in the summer, she was listed as low as No. 79.
