With songs like “You and Me on the Rock,” Brandi Carlile frequently acknowledges the influence of Joni Mitchell and the Laurel Canyon singer-songwriters in her work. In the Canyon Haze, a deluxe edition of the album with updated, Laurel Canyon-inspired versions of the songs, is being released by Carlile to commemorate the one-year anniversary of In These Silent Days.
An appropriately new rendition of “You and Me on the Rock” with a guest vocal performance by Carlile’s wife Catherine serves as the album’s first release. It’s a charming, simplified version of the song that juxtaposes Brandi’s soaring leads with Catherine’s low-key harmonies.
The sparse instrumental bed has the intimacy and coziness of a living room performance while shimmering like distant city lights.
Together with Phil and Tim Hanseroth, two of her longstanding colleagues, Carlile produced and created the new album. In addition to reinventing the songs from In These Silent Days, Carlile also does so with the iconic “Space Oddity” by David Bowie. On November 25, In the Canyon Haze will be made available first as a limited-edition vinyl, and then on December 2, everywhere.
Ahead of her “Beyond These Silent Days” tour, Carlile is up for Artist of the Year and Album of the Year at the 2022 Americana Honors & Awards. She will perform twice at Colorado’s Red Rocks the following Friday and Saturday, followed by appearances at Atlanta’s Fox Theater, Tennessee’s Pilgrimage Festival, and New York City’s Madison Square Garden.
