Fans went crazy for Hailey Bieber’s “glazed donut” nails this summer, and her signature skincare trend of the same name even spurred the creation of her own line, Rhode. She is no stranger to generating a stir on social media with her beauty tips.
However, people are talking about Bieber’s “brownie glazed lips” for all the wrong reasons.
A number of readers are criticizing Justin Bieber’s wife for cultural appropriation after she posted her most recent beauty look on TikTok in September with the description, “ready for all the fall things including brownie glazed lips.”
While Bieber didn’t claim to have invented the effect, she also didn’t add that women of color had been sporting the same look for decades. Bieber produced her lip look with a brown liner and clear gloss.
So basically the same color combination our tias have been utilizing, one user commented, “90’s LATINA LIPS love that you took inspiration from them.”
Before taking aim at Bieber in a video that has received 2.4 million views so far, TikToker Benulus said that she frequently gets criticism for the way her own glossy brown lips look.
“Y’all s—t on my lips every single time I post. But a white woman does it, it’s gonna become a trend,” she said.
“Yeah, I’m so flattered that Hailey Bieber always gets inspired by my community, by the POC community, but it just irks me that because she’s done it now, it’s gonna become so trendy.”
In another clip, TikTok user ZZHilton wrote, “Considering how long women of color had to struggle for brands to stop name darker shades after food, it doesn’t hit the right way when you try to pass on a brown lip liner as your own concept and call it a ‘brownie’ lip liner.”
Iris Beilin satirically titled her TikTok with the words “Wow!!! I’ve never seen anything like this, so use the hashtag “#brownieglazedlips”
She said, without mentioning Bieber by name, “This is inventive,” making no secret of her thoughts towards the “trend.”
