Donald Trump and his allies spent days criticizing the Justice Department and Merrick Garland for carrying out a search warrant at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago estate.
They incited outrage among their supporters and took advantage of the DOJ’s customary secrecy to present their own versions of what happened.
Some even came up with the catchphrase “Release the warrant” as they stormed the department. Even on social, the raid was heavily criticised as lacking objective.
Top DOJ officials claimed that the necessity for the department’s customary confidentiality had effectively been waived in light of the public reaction to the FBI search requested by Trump and his counsel. On social media, Trump confirmed the search.
Many of Trump’s supporters have spent the past week demanding that the government release the legal document the feds obtained in order to search the Palm Beach residence.
They have claimed that the refusal to do so is proof the government has no evidence against the former president and the raid was an unwarranted attempt to politically persecute him.
This was an odd course of action for two reasons. The first is that Trump himself has had a copy of the warrant for the entire time, but curiously!, has chosen not to make it public. The other explanation? Merrick Garland, the attorney general, finally called them out after all the hoopla and insinuations.
Yes, in a stunning turn of events as shown in the video above, Garland revealed during a press conference on Thursday that the Justice Department has submitted an application to unseal the court-issued search warrant that allowed the FBI to search Mar-a-Lago. You may have guessed that this is bad news for the former president.
Garland continued his statements, which lasted only a few minutes, by confirming that he personally approved the choice to apply for the search warrant.
Garland also denounced the assaults on FBI officers that right-wing commentators, Republican lawmakers, and backers of the former president have made since the raid.
