Despite stating that she had “no plans” to compete at Wimbledon this year, Venus Williams admitted that the aura surrounding the grasscourt grand slam convinced her to enter.
The 42-year-old has teamed up with Jamie Murray, the brother of three-time grand slam champion Andy Murray, to compete in the mixed doubles despite not having played professionally in nearly a year.
Venus had previously stated that she wouldn’t be competing this week, but she asked Murray for a last-minute wild-card entry and on Wednesday’s mixed doubles draw, the pair were formally introduced.
The crowd-favored duo shocked even themselves on Friday by defeating Alicja Rosolska and Michael Venus 6-3 6-7(7) 6-3.
“I had no game strategy. I became ecstatic when I saw the grass “explained Williams.
“Although the French Open is a wonderful event when I was there, my heart didn’t beat the same way. Not because I could play, but I didn’t have any plans. That is the reason I asked (Murray) at the last minute.”
