Due to Deiveson Figueiredo’s injury, the UFC decided to create an interim flyweight belt, with Brandon Moreno and Kai Kara-France squaring off for the prize at UFC 277 on Saturday.

The belt itself hardly seemed necessary, but rather felt more like a consolation prize for Moreno, who was scheduled to appear in a fourth fight with Figueiredo after giving up his title to the Brazilian in January. Moreno had lost his title back to the Brazilian.

1-1-1 was the same as their career series. Kara-France and Moreno? The UFC may have another trilogy on their hands following Saturday thanks to Moreno’s victory in their first 2019 matchup.

That did not occur. Instead, after an exciting co-main event, it’s on to Moreno-Figueiredo 4.

UFC 277: Brandon Moreno vs Kara-France, Round 1

The opening exchanges between Kai Kara-France and Brandon Moreno in the UFC 277 co-main event were tense. About two minutes in, Moreno would attempt a head kick that was blocked but almost missed. About thirty seconds after Moreno put his left hand down, Kara-France did the same with his right. Following a takedown attempt by Moreno, Kara-France was able to get up and separate during some clinch work.

Then Moreno entered the fray with a combination that ended in a body kick. The action picked up in round two, but Moreno was able to take the back after dodging a kick.

He then wore down Kara-France beside the fence and elbowed him. However, Kara-France managed to get back to the middle of the ring and connected with a leg kick. The City Kickboxing competitor would land several more leg kicks throughout the round.

UFC 277: Brandon Moreno vs Kai Kara-France, Round 3

Early in round three, Moreno was planted on his back due to a sweep, but he quickly raised a high guard. While still suffering some injuries, Moreno had a cut under one eye from an elbow and suffered additional shots while scrambling to get up. Moreno sprang to his feet and fanned a spinning back fist. But just as Kara-France appeared to be taking control, Moreno struck with a left hand and a powerful kick to the body! After Kara-France was knocked out, Moreno used ground and pound to finish her off.

The interim flyweight title and a fourth meeting with Deiveson Figueiredo were awarded to Moreno when Kara-France covered up and referee Herb Dean eventually intervened to make the save.

After the victory, Deiveson Figueiredo was brought into the ring. Moreno told him to set an example for his daughter, family, and the rest of the world, and he apologized for some earlier remarks that had hurt the champion. In response, Figueiredo declared that Moreno had the night, and he triumphantly raised his hand. The two champions showed each other the utmost respect. With the hatchet down, it appears that Moreno-Figueiredo 4 will go place, with Figueiredo requesting that the bout take place in Brazil.
