Ason Kokrak’s Travelers Championship on Friday came to an interesting conclusion.
According to Tour officials, Kokrak was disqualified for not recording a score on his final hole and then failing to turn in a scorecard. But that doesn’t cover everything.
Late in Friday’s second round at TPC River Highlands, Kokrak was sitting at even par, two strokes below the projected cut line, and unless he sank a 43-yard approach shot at the short, dogleg ninth hole, he was already probably going to leave early. Instead, ShotLink claims that his second shot traveled “87 yards into the unknown.”
Due to Kokrak’s failure to finish the hole, he was disqualified. Many people on social media speculated as to why Kokrak chose not to drop and finish his round.
We now know this owing to Will McGirt, Kokrak’s playing rival. Kokrak didn’t realize his ball had left the field, according to McGirt, and it took him some time to figure out where to drop from. Kokrak decided to pick up his ball and resume play because the group waiting behind him was waiting by the time he could decide where to take his drop. Kokrak had already missed the cut.
Sobel quoted McGirt as saying, “But it wasn’t some walk-off from PGA Tour life.”
