According to persons briefed on the situation and reported to CNN, federal authorities searched Jeffrey Clark’s home on Wednesday.
Before the Capitol riot on January 6, former President Donald Trump attempted to appoint Clark, a former attorney with the DOJ, as attorney general after senior officials rejected his claims of vote fraud.
Although it was unclear what they were looking for, the Justice Department’s extensive investigation into the effort to rig the 2020 elections was the reason behind the raid on Clark’s residence, according to sources familiar with the situation.
The committee has its fifth hearing on January 6
The search took place on the same day that the Justice Department issued subpoenas to individuals involved in the Trump campaign’s effort to compile a list of fictitious electors to declare a Trump victory against Joe Biden. He was at the center of Trump’s attempt to have the Justice Department make up evidence that there was enough voter fraud in Georgia and other states to cause him to lose the election.
While confirming that “there was law enforcement action in the area” of Clark’s home, a spokeswoman for the US Attorney’s Office in Washington declined to comment on any specific person or activity.
Requests for comment from Clark’s counsel went unanswered.
