According to the wife of a jailed opposition lawmaker and critic, Russia’s Vladimir Putin “signed his own death warrant” with the war in Ukraine.
In April, political activist and journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza, who has written columns for The Washington Post, was arrested in Moscow.
He was charged with “disseminating deliberately false information” about Russia’s military, a crime punishable by up to 15 years in prison under a new law enacted shortly after the invasion of Ukraine in late February and aimed at quelling criticism.
His wife Evgenia Kara-Murza told The Guardian newspaper that he is now risking a lengthy prison sentence for “calling this war a war.”
Evgenia Kara-Murza believes her husband has reason to be concerned about his safety, considering that he has survived two alleged poisonings.
She justified her husband’s choice to return to Russia despite being a permanent US resident, even after the invasion of Ukraine, stating it was because “as a Russian leader, he cannot call on people to continue fighting if he himself is somewhere secure.”
Putin signed his own death warrant with Ukraine’s warwife of jailed opposition critic – as reported, and according to her (Evgenia Kara-Murza) his time is running out.
She said: “I believe Putin has signed his own death warrant with this war, but he will fall the sooner we end these double standards: at the same time as countries support the Ukrainian people by sending weapons and providing humanitarian aid and imposing sanctions on the Russian economy, they also give Putin billions for oil and gas, which allows him to continue his aggression […] this has to stop because honestly, it is inexplicable.” She could not immediately be reached for further comment.
