Tiger Woods Fails To Win The PGA Championship

On Thursday, Tiger Woods returned to a major competition, and after a promising start, things began to unravel.

Woods finished four over par at the P.G.A. Championship, playing in a group with Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy. At five under, McIlroy was the early leader in the clubhouse.

Woods, who won the 2007 P.G.A. Championship at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., initially showed little evidence of the catastrophic leg injuries he incurred in a vehicle accident in February 2021. He appeared to start limping a little more around the end of his opening nine holes.

And, despite getting down to two-under in the early stages, he struggled on the back nine.

After missing more than 500 days of top-flight golf following his crash, Woods returned to the majors at the Masters last month. His one-under opening round brought back memories, but he struggled the rest of the way, ending 47th despite cutting. He was hobbling and struggling to stoop fully to line up putts at that competition.

Thursday, Woods began on the 10th hole, birdieing it with a 3-foot putt after a beautiful chip. With a 15-footer, he birdied the 14th as well. On 15, however, he found the rough and a bunker and was unable to get up and down, falling to one under.

He found a greenside bunker with a bad iron approach on the 18th, a difficult hole, and missed a 20-foot putt to fall back to even.

He made two more bogeys after that, at No. 1 (a tee shot into the rough behind a tree was the cause) and No. 2, where he hit a long putt from the fringe 10 feet past and missed the comebacker.

Woods responded with a birdie on No. 3, a 10-foot-plus putt that enthralled his large gallery. On No. 4, however, he returned the favor with a poor bunker shot that rolled over and off the green. He ended himself with yet another foe.

On the eighth hole, he lost another stroke by finding a bunker on the difficult par 3, then blowing the next shot way over the hole and missing the long putt back.

He appeared to strike it rich on the ninth hole when his tee shot caromed off a tree and fell in the fairway. His second shot, though, went over the green, and he flubbed the chip, leaving him short of the green. He made another bogey after two more strokes.
