On Friday, May 6, escapologist Jonathan Goodwin and his partner, Sherlock actor Amanda Abbington, appeared on ITV’s Lorraine to discuss his paralysis during a prank. More information regarding this occurrence can be found here.
Amanda sobbed during the interview as she described her future husband as an “inspiration.” Jonathan, who is from Pembrokeshire and now needs a wheelchair, told Lorraine Kelly on Britain’s Got Talent: “It sounds really dramatic but I nearly died.”
Jonathan, who competed on BGT in 2019, sustained third-degree burns, shattered both legs, and damaged his back in a stunt that went horribly wrong last year. He was intended to break free from a straight jacket while hung 30 feet in the air between two cars. Goodwin was squashed between the cars as they took fire, which was a horrific turn of events.
During his appearance with Lorraine, Jonathan explained how he “saved himself” by avoiding hitting his skull when he fell. Despite the incredible clip circulating on social media, the BGT daredevil has chosen not to see it.
Jonathan tells Lorraine in the emotional interview that after the accident, he offered Amanda a “get out of jail free pass” because it was early in their relationship. Lorraine comforted Amanda by telling her that “it’s all really emotional.” Following the incident, the couple, who met after Amanda’s breakup from The Hobbit star Martin Freeman, said they are “closer and tighter” than ever.
Jonathan’s options are restricted in the future, according to his surgeon, because the damage to his spine was “the worst he’d ever seen.” Despite this, the pair are looking forward to their wedding later this year.
