Shakur Stevenson took home two victories on Saturday night.
His first victory came in a unanimous decision over Oscar Valdez, 117-110, 118-109, 118-109. Stevenson dominated from the start, knocking out Valdez in the sixth round in front of a hostile crowd of 10,102 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Valdez managed to cling on, but he never posed a significant threat to Stevenson. Stevenson improved to 18-0 for the season, while Valdez fell to 30-1.
The second victory occurred during the post-fight press conference. Stevenson took a breath, got down on one knee, pulled out a ring, and proposed to his girlfriend, rapper Young Lyric… who accepted.
Stevenson and Lyric have been dating for a while and have a daughter, Leilani Asha Stevenson, who was born in December.
Stevenson won a silver medal for Team USA at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In ESPN’s junior lightweight divisional rankings, he is presently rated first.
“I’m a superstar in this sport,” the 24-year-old Stevenson said after the fight. “Line ’em up. I’m ready for whoever.”
