US National Soccer Team Secures Spot In 2020 World Cup In Qatar
U.S Men National Team

The United States men carried the shame and the sting of missing the Soccer World Cup in Russia for four years.

It did not matter that only few players were left from the team, or that the miss prompted a reboot that has resulted in what is either the greatest collection of talent the USMNT has had. Since 32 years, missing a World Cup for the first time defined the current group as much as it did the previous one.

Regardless of the uninspiring performance and a 2-0 defeat to Costa-Rica, the United States men officially qualified for the Soccer World Cup on Wednesday night. The loss to the Ticos dropped the USMNT a spot, to third, in the standings, but it was still enough to secure one of Concacaf’s three automatic slot.

Aside the U.S men, Canada and Mexico also qualified, while Costa Rica will go to a one-game playoff against a team from Oceania in June.

“I’m extremely proud, extremely proud of this group,” said Christian Pulisic, who sobbed on the field after the USMNT were knocked out four years ago. “It’s a bit of a weird feeling now because I hate to lose so much. But I’m really proud.”

A lot will be made of the lackluster showing against Costa Rica, which didn’t field some of their major players for the fear they’d get a second yellow card and miss the playoff. The U.S men created few chances and could not be productive with them, even after standout Costa Rican goalie Keylor Navas left with about 10 minutes left.

The USMNT looked disjointed after Juan Pablo Vargas of Costa Rica scored the first goal. 8 minutes later, goalkeeper Zack Steffen botched the clearance of another corner kick and got out of balance, allowing Anthony Contreras a simple shot on a close side that put the Ticos up 2-0.
