Nancy Pelosi Reads Bono’s Poem On Russia-Ukraine Invasion To Mark St. Patrick’s Day

On St. Patrick’s Day, Nancy Pelosi read a poem by Bono on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, 81, recited the poem for guests at the annual Friends of Ireland luncheon in Washington D.C. on Thursday, including President Joe Biden.

“I got this message this morning from Bono,” Pelosi remarked of U2’s frontman before adding that, “Most of us, whether we’re in Ireland or here, Bono has been a very Irish part of our lives.”

Pelosi continued by reading Bono’s poem, “Oh Saint Patrick, he drove out the snakes with his prayers, but that’s not all it takes. For the snakes symbolizes an evil that rises and hides your heart, as it breaks.”

“And the evil has risen my friends from the darkness that lives in some men. But in sorrow and fear, that’s when saint can appear, to drive out those old snakes once again,” she proceeded. ‘And they struggle for us to be free, from Ukraine, and St. Patrick’s name now Zelenskyy.”

U2, who hailed from Ireland, had already written about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in a post on Instagram last week, praising the Ukrainian people’s fortitude.

“The Ukrainian people are teaching the rest of the world what freedom looks like, what freedom feels like, and most importantly what freedom acts like,” U2 wrote. ‘The bully in the neighborhood will not prevail. Bless your poetic souls. We keep you in our prayers.”

Biden, a 79 years old American President, spoke at the Friends of Ireland gathering on his own Irish roots.

Irish Americans think they’re more Irish than the Irish. And – but that’s kind of how I was raised, like so many Americans of Irish heritage – like other people of other heritage as well,” Biden posited. “I was – it was imbued in me to be proud of – proud of my heritage.
