Over forty thousand residents in Southern Maryland are reportedly in darkness after severe weather caused power outages in the region.

Many electric lines were been weighed down by trees while many others were fallen as a result of recent winter storms.

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) has reported that they are working round the clock to ensure electric power is restored as soon as possible, however, their speed is been hindered by fallen trees, blocking access to roads.

According to SMECO’s spokesman – Tom Dennison;

“This heavy wet snowfall has not only caused power outages, but it has made driving conditions treacherous and delayed line crews. Although we are working to restore service until late this evening, most of our crews will take a break overnight and be back on the job at 5 a.m. Tuesday.”

It was reported that about 790 incidents were affecting thousands of residents, and about 8 inches of snow is expected to fall on Southern Maryland today.

Customers are encouraged to call the helpline 1-877-74-SMECO (1-877-747-6326) or visit smeco.coop or use SMECO’s text messaging service.
