Days after President Buhari commissioned the mega rice pyramid in Abuja, an old picture of a rice pyramid built with wood resurfaced on the internet.
Some Nigerians believed the recent rice pyramid which was uncovered by the president was not totally built up with rice bags. They believed a wooden structure was used to construct the pyramid before rice bags were then used to cover it up.
However, further checks revealed that the viral photo alleged was not that of the Abuja rice pyramid recently.
The photo originated from the launch of “Mission to rebuild Ogun State”, by the Ogun State Government in 2018, when they launched a local brand of ofada rice.
Fast forward to 2024 and into 2025, rice is no longer a staple and affordable food in Nigeria. Inflation has pushed the cost of rice way above the common man as the cost of a bag of rice, currently at 85,000 Naira, is twice the minimum wage.
