49 years old Keechant Sewell is about to become New York’s first police commissioner, to lead the NYPD in 2022.
She was selected by Eric Adams, who described her as a proven crime-fighter with the experience and emotional intelligence to deliver safety and justice to people in New york.
Keechant Sewell was reported to have over 25 years of experience in the police department, mostly with the Nassau police, spanning over roles of undercover assignments, hostage negotiations, directing detective squads, incidences of gun violence, etc.
Keechant Sewell who was also the first black woman to become the Chief of Detectives in Nassau, will now oversee New York City with its increasing gun violence.
In her speech, she said she would focus majorly on violent gun-related crimes upholding public safety as well as police accountability.
