Google is honoring renowned French mathematician and physicist Émilie du Châtelet today, 17 December, being her birthday, by putting her up in the Google Doodle.
Émilie du Châtelet who was born in 1706 was known for her translation and commentary on Isaac Newton’s 1687 book – Principia, which contains basic laws of physics.
Her translation was published after her death and is still considered the standard French translation to date.
One of her major commentaries was centered around energy, kinetic energy in particular.
Sadly, Émilie du Châtelet died on 10 September 1749, due to complications during childbirth.
