The National Communications Commission- NCC, has directed all telecommunications operators (MTN, Airtel, Glo, 9Mobile & Others) to block all sim cards that are not linked with the user’s National Identity Number (NIN).
The exercise which was slated for two weeks will end by 30th of December 2020. Stiff penalties which include withdrawal of operating license were set for telecommunication operators who defaulted.
There was no formal reason for the sudden implementation though it is expected to be to further strengthen the security system in the country.
Telecommunication users are advised to dial *346# to retrieve their NIN” or visit the NIMC website to enroll for the national identification number.
However, no formal communication has been sent to users from their respective telecommunication operators, as time ticks by.
