End SARS or Reform SARS? What Nigerians should clamor for!

SARS1

As the quest to scrap SARS continues to grow by the minute, let us take a moment to think deeply about what we really want. We don’t want to be like the proverbial Tortoise or Snail that lamented and wished that his shell be taken off because it’s a big burden and load on him. The Tortoise and snail had a point that the weight of the shell prevented them from moving fast, thereby adding more misery in the face of economic hardship. However, they forget that that same heavy shell was their only or major form of defense against predators!

The Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, also known as FSARS or SARS, surely have their very awful side. Bad sides are present in every organization, we had one within the 12 disciples. However, the bad side of the SARS unit of the Nigerian Police Force really stinks and should be addressed before it compromises the entire leg of the Police. However, the SARS unit has been very helpful in curbing the activities of the underground world- armed robberies, cultism, fraud of whatever kind, etc. They had really lived to a very large extent, up to the expectation for the reason they were formed in 1992 by the then commissioner of police Simeon Danladi Midenda!

Amputating the SARS leg of the Nigerian police force without making provision for another leaves you very vulnerable to every form of attack! Let us not forget they the SARS are specially trained for the type of job they do.

We should be clamoring for a “Total Restructuring of SARS”. This entails a rebuild from scratch. There should be standard criteria every police officer must attain before been drafted into the new SARS unit. There should also be an independent investigative body to look into cases of bad behavior amongst its officers.  Nigeria cannot be left naked without a special intelligence team!
