6 Million Electricity Meters to be distributed to Nigerians Free of Charge, funded by CBN

Good news Nigeria…the Federal Government announced that they would free distribute six million meters free of charge to across the country! The exercise will be conducted via a program dubbed the “National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP)”. Audio or not, time will tell!

While the cost of the meter will be recovered by the DISCOS, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will provide its funding. The apex bank also directed that the electricity meters will only be sourced through local meter manufacturers and assemblers, thus creating new jobs and a new meter manufacturing sub-sector in the country.”

Let’s hope this scheme goes out as planned because meters have always been free on paper, but in reality, people pay for it at exorbitant prices ranging from N20,000 to N70,000.
