Mason Greenwood achieved a new personal milestone, surpassing his own record for goals and assists in a single season by scoring twice for Getafe on Saturday.
The Manchester United forward opened the scoring against Almeria in La Liga and added another goal after halftime, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead. He then provided an assist for Jaime Mata to make it 3-1, marking his most productive season in terms of goals and assists.
Greenwood’s current tally stands at eight goals and six assists for the 2023-24 season, surpassing his previous best of 11 in a single campaign with Manchester United in 2019-20.
After a goal drought of four games, Greenwood returned to form with another influential performance for Jose Bordalas’ Getafe. Although on loan for the rest of the season, Greenwood’s future beyond the campaign remains uncertain amid links to various clubs, including Juventus, with little expectation of returning to Manchester United.
Getafe president Angel Torres expressed his desire to retain Greenwood, but whether he stays with the club under Jose Bordalas’ management remains to be seen.
Speaking about Greenwood’s future, Bordalas stated, “We haven’t spoken about it yet. He’s in the same situation as the other loanees. When the season is over, it will be time to get down to work to see if Mason will be able to stay another year or not. It will depend on his club and the decision he makes.”
Getafe, along with Greenwood, will conclude their La Liga campaign with matches against Athletic Club, Cadiz, Atletico Madrid, Alaves, and Real Mallorca, providing Greenwood with opportunities to further bolster his goal and assist tally before the end of his loan spell.
